In The Key of Z: Classical

Born after the year 2000, Gen Z takes a new approach to
everything by default. But how does this contrast against the long-
established canon of music history?

In the Key of Z: Classical explores this question through the eyes of five students whose devotion to their craft defies generational trends.

WXXI’s  In the Key of Z: Classical is a dynamic digital-first series that
celebrates the emerging classical talent of the Rochester region.
Through captivating live performances and insightful interviews, the series introduces audiences to the next generation of classical performers. These
talented artists share their musical foundations and aspirations for the future.

In addition to the video segments, an audio version of each will air on WXXI Classical and stream live on WXXIClassical.org.

Meet our host Steve Johnson

A native of Herndon, Virginia, Steve first came to Rochester as a student at the Eastman School of Music. He has loved classical music and public media since his youth, when he was inspired by the radio broadcasts of Rob Kapilow on his local NPR affiliate. He pursued this love through college, having earned his Bachelor’s in Music Education and Master’s in Musicology at Indiana
University and, most recently, his Ph.D. in Musicology at Eastman. His Alfred Mann Award-winning dissertation discussed the relationship between nationalist politics and opera in North Korea.

Steve has advocated for classical music on social media for years. He got his start on YouTube with his award-winning web series The Listener’s Guide and collaborated with the Dallas Opera on their series Opera in Brief that gave synopses of their productions through humorous stick-figure sketches. Now, he is active on TikTok and Instagram promoting WXXI programming every day— be sure to follow him for all the latest content (@stevetomjon)!

American Masters: Renegades

Renegades: Five people with disabilities who changed history with ASL & Open Captioning

Renegades

(US, 2024, 60 min)
Renegades is a series of five 12-minute short films showcasing the lives of diverse, lesser-known historical figures with disabilities, exploring not only their impact on and contributions to U.S. society, but also the concept of disability culture, which honors the uniqueness of disability.

Renegades, American Masters’s latest short documentary series, celebrates the legacies of historical trailblazers with disabilities. Not only does the series champion these cultural icons, but also more than 90% of the RENEGADES production team identify as being an individual with a disability.

In observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month and as part of American Masters’s Visibility, Inclusion and Accessibility (VIA) Initiative, new episodes of Renegades are released every Tuesday in October on the American Masters YouTube channel, PBS App and PBS.org and here on this page.

Dialogue on Disability • January 13 – 19, 2025

Blue background with white text that reads: Dialogue on Disability The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series

Since 2003 WXXI and the Al Sigl Community of Agencies have worked together to help break the ingrained stereotypes about individuals with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities with its week-long initiative, Dialogue on Disability. Held every January, the initiative is designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with physical, developmental, and intellectual disabilities.

In an effort to continue its commitment to motivate individuals to take action and to include more people with disabilities in the workplace, in schools, neighborhoods, and in all aspects of society, WXXI has partnered with the Golisano Foundation in a multi-year initiative called Move to Include™.

Dialogue on Disability is a partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies – in conjunction with the Herman and Margaret Schwartz Community Series. Dialogue on Disability is supported by the Fred L. Emerson Foundation with additional support from The Golisano Foundation.
