Mysteries of Mental Illness explores the story of mental illness in science and society. The four-part series traces the evolution of this complex topic from its earliest days to present times. It explores dramatic attempts across generations to unravel the mysteries of mental illness and gives voice to contemporary Americans across a spectrum of experiences.

Student Mental Health Matters News Reports

Public media stations across New York state are collaborating to create a teacher professional development toolkit to improve student mental health. Using PBS Learning Media, teachers will better understand and address self-harm among students. To further raise awareness, public media journalists are focusing coverage on the topic as well. Funding for this program is provided in part by the New York State Education Department.

Based on Padraic Lillis’ award-winning one-man show, this special blends live performance elements with narrative cinematic storytelling in an intimate conversation about suicide, addiction, and the importance of sharing stories in our darkest moments.

On stage in performance, among friends in conversation, and in the streets and subways of New York City, Lillis offers his own story, and empowers his audiences to deepen their own relationship with life, mental health, and mortality.

Lillis is the Founding Artistic Director of The Farm Theater whose mission is to cultivate early career artists through workshops, productions, and mentoring. He has been awarded: New York Innovative Theatre Outstanding Director, NY International Fringe Festival’s Overall Excellence in Directing, Best Director at United Solo Festival, and Best Short film at the Milan International Film Festival. Lillis was the Humana Visiting Scholar and Artist in Residence at Centre College. His film, Get To Eleven, that addresses mental health, suicide ideation, and recovery premiered at The Big Apple Film Festival, screened at the Reel Minds Film Festival in Rochester, NY, and has been awarded Best Feature at the Inwood Film Festival. 

Lillis is the host of The Farm Theater’s Bullpen Sessions podcast. He is a mental health advocate, member of the Labyrinth Theater Company and a lifelong Yankee fan. Lillis is a native Rochesterian and graduate of Fairport High School.

Your Fantastic Mind: Adolescent Mental Health Crisis On-Demand

Social media, academic stress and other crucial factors contribute to the adolescent mental health crisis in America. This episode explores the alarming rise of anxiety, depression, and suicide among teenagers, addressing causes of the crisis and exploring possible solutions. Meet families and teens affected by mental health disorders, as well as psychiatric experts calling for change.

Teen Mental Health and Suicide in Black Families On-Demand

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for teens in the U.S. While leaders acknowledge a teen mental health crisis, much discourse focuses on suicide as a white issue. Filmmakers Kalia Hunter (Dom) and Kallista Palapas (I’ll Be There) recount two young black lives cut short by suicide, and in doing so, compel communities to act. WXXI and public media organizations across New York State have come together to raise awareness about specific issues that impact our communities throughout the state. You can access hours of content through broadcast or on-demand content that provides resources and information about the opioid and overdose epidemic, aging and senior isolation, and student mental health.

Student Mental Health Initiative: This multi-platform project shines a light on the importance of student mental health and well-being. As part of this initiative, special programs address student mental health concerns. The initiative created a PBS LearningMedia Student Mental Health Matters: Toolkit for Educators to help them support the mental well-being of students. This initiative is a New York State Education Department funded initiative that has called on NYS public media organizations to help address the issues of student mental health throughout the state. A Special Focus week: September 25-Oct. 1, 2023 highlighted the topic. To further raise awareness, public media journalists are focusing coverage on the topic as well (and WXXI News Mental Health coverage). NY PBS Stations are broadcasting and producing additional programming all year. The WXXI Student Mental Health Website continues to offer support.

About The Student Mental Health Initiative

WXXI and public media stations across New York State address mental health issues among teens with a new initiative, Student Mental Health Matters. Also follow ongoing coverage of the issues with WXXI News and programming on-air and on-demand. 

Working in collaboration WXXI and NYS public broadcasters kick off this effort with a focused week of programming Saturday, September 23 through Sunday, October 1, 2023. The New York State Public Media Student Mental Health Matters is a New York State Education Department funded initiative that has called on NYS public media organizations to help address the issues of student mental health throughout the state.

Student Mental Health Matters: A Toolkit for Educators
is designed to equip educators, school staff, and school mental health professionals with critical knowledge and strategies needed to support the mental well-being of their students. Digital media resources — curated from expert mental health organizations and public media sources — cover suicide prevention, stress and anxiety, self-harm, adverse childhood experiences, and social media, and offer:       

  • Expert perspectives from mental health professionals, school administrators and educators aimed at helping teachers better understand a topic; 
  • Student perspectives that reveal the lived experience of elementary, middle, and high school students;  
  • Strategies that provide real-world applications for teachers’ practices.   

All resources and accompanying support materials are intended to be used in a professional development setting and may contain material considered sensitive to some viewers.

The Overdose Epidemic: This initiative examines New York State’s addiction and overdose crisis. “Overdose Epidemic” programming draws attention to this public health crisis and raise awareness of services available in local communities for those impacted by addiction. This initiative also includes collaboration with the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). A Special Focus week: February 13-19, 2023 highlighted the topic. This initiative is a New York State Education Department funded initiative that has called on NYS public media organizations to help educate the public of the changing factors in the overdose epidemic throughout the state and ways to address it. To further raise awareness, public media journalists are focusing coverage on the topic as well (and WXXI News Overdose Epidemic coverage). NY PBS Stations are broadcasting and producing additional programming all year. The WXXI Overdose Epidemic Website continues to offer programs & resources.

About The New York Overdose Epidemic Initiative

The New York State Public Media Overdose Epidemic is a New York State Education Department funded initiative that has called on NYS public media organizations to help address the issues of overdose and addiction throughout the state. As part of this initiative, WXXI will host a week of special programming, running February 13 through February 19, that looks at the overdose epidemic here in Rochester and beyond. The “Overdose Epidemic” programming draws attention to this public health crisis and raise awareness of services available in local communities for those impacted by addiction. This initiative also include collaboration with the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS).

About The Aging Together In New York Initiative

Public media stations across New York state are collaborating on a multi-platform project addressing social isolation among older adults through news coverage, shared personal stories, modeling healthy relationships, building community and providing resources for seniors that reduce isolation and build resiliency. Funding is provided in part by the New York State Education Department with collaboration from the NYS Office of the Aging. Listen to the stories and talk show podcasts on-demand.

This program is part of The Aging Together In New York,  an initiative funded by the New York State Education Department that has called on NYS public media organizations to create a multi-platform project to help address mental health and addiction throughout the state. The project includes broadcast offerings, online content, and special events, like this screening. The NYS stations will also work to create comprehensive digital teaching tools, online learning, and essential instructional content.

Young at Heart: Empowering Older Adults Statewide Virtual Screening Event On-Demand
Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at 7 p.m. online
WXXI and the other NYS stations hosted a virtual screening of Young@Heart with subject-area experts as they explore strategies for combatting senior isolation in conversation with members of the Young@Heart Chorus.

In our first hour, a special broadcast previously recorded at St. Johns in Rochester. During this conversation in front of a live audience, a panel of experts explores issues important to older adults and those who care for them. The discussion includes points about social isolation, maintaining friendships, caregiving, and how to reconcile the different factors of aging. Click here to listen to the hour. 

Then in our second hour, we continue our conversation about aging by exploring one option for caregiving: aging in place. Brothers Mark and Tom McDermott founded Touching Hearts at Home in 2007 — three years after their mother was diagnosed with cancer. They say during her illness, they came to understand the importance of having qualified compassionate caregivers in her home. Click here to listen to the hour.

Young @ Heart’s 40th Anniversary Show

Aging Matters: Aging with Pride On-Demand

New York has the fourth-largest population of older adults in the United States, with 3.2 million individuals – about 16 percent of the population – over 65. The state’s population of those over the age of 60 is projected to grow to 5.3 million by 2030 with those over 80 years of age exceeding 1.2 million.

WXXI joins all nine public television stations throughout New York in the Aging Together in New York initiative. Stations will continue to examine the issue and share critical resources to combat social isolation and loneliness as the effort continues until the end of the year.
