Before They Take Us Away: On-Demand

Chronicle the previously untold stories of Japanese Americans who self-evacuated from the West Coast in the wake of forced incarceration and internment during World War II.

About the Film from the Film’s website

Before They Take Us Away is an award-winning feature documentary that captures the previously untold stories of Japanese Americans whose families self-evacuated from California upon the issuance of Executive Order 9066 during World War II.  The option of “voluntary” relocation was available for only a very brief period from early February to late March, 1942.  In early February, the US Western Defense Command (WDC) indicated that it intended to remove all men, women and children of Japanese descent from a restricted zone consisting of all of California, Western Oregon, Western Washington and Southern Arizona.  In March, the newly established War Relocation Authority (WRA) urged those affected to move voluntarily rather than being subject to forced removal and incarceration in concentration camps.  However, the overwhelming majority of Japanese Americans lacked the resources or connections necessary to move anywhere outside the restricted zone.  Compounding the situation, officials in many states outside the restricted zone quickly declared that Japanese Americans were not welcome.

Despite the daunting circumstances and the short window of time available, approximately 5,000 Japanese American men, women and children managed to leave the restricted zone on their own before voluntary relocation was halted by the WDC in late March 1942.  As this film will show, the experiences of self-evacuees varied greatly.  Some fared well, while others encountered serious hardships including hunger, hostility, violence and forced religious conversion.  All endured a hurried and difficult uprooting from their homes and communities, and were forced to fend for themselves without even the most rudimentary support from the US government.  The self-evacuees experienced a unique kind of double-displacement, both from their homes and from the shared experience of the larger Japanese American community. Woven together, these personal stories powerfully capture a community in the midst of a forced migration, and the courage and tremendous hard labor it took to regain their footing.

Norm & Company: Tribute to Jane & Larry Glazer On-Demand

WXXI remembers the Glazers in this special tribute.

WXXI presents a special tribute broadcast in memory of Jane and Larry Glazer, who died in the crash of their small plane in September. Last March the Glazers sat down with WXXI President Norm Silverstein for an episode of Norm & Company, and a specially edited version of that program.

In the tribute, Silverstein introduces the archived episode and shares how important the Glazers were to the Rochester community. Then we join a conversation recorded in March 2013, where the Glazers recounted how they met, why they chose to make Rochester their home, and why they devoted their lives to making this community a better place to live. Larry Glazer, CEO and Managing Partner of Buckingham Properties, told how he got his start and how he became one of Rochester’s biggest developers. He was the man behind Alexander Place (the old Genesee Hospital site) and the development of the new Midtown tower.  Jane Glazer owned QCI Direct, a mail order company that last year saw $50 million in sales.

Norm & Company is a half-hour series hosted by Silverstein. In each episode, he speaks with a long-time Rochesterian as he/she recounts fascinating stories about Western New York.

Norm & Company: Dr. Elizabeth McAnarney On-Demand

Dr. Elizabeth McAnarney, Professor and Chair Emerita at the University of Rochester Medical Center School of Medicine, joins WXXI President Norm Silverstein for an episode of Norm & Company. Dr. McAnarney shares stories of growing up in post World War II, her work as a pioneering pediatrician in the Rochester community, her vision for the care of children in the future, and her mentors, role models, and lessons for the future.

Dr. McAnarney was the first woman to chair the Department of Pediatrics at URMC. She earned the Albert Kaiser Medal from the Rochester Academy of Medicine (2003), the 18th annual Athena Award from the Women’s Council of the Rochester Business Alliance, Inc., and the Crystal Heart Award from the Ronald McDonald House. She also serves as a member of the board of directors at Nazareth College and EquiCenter.

Losing Iraq: On-Demand

Examine the chaos in Iraq, the rise of ISIS and the U.S. role in the conflict.

FRONTLINE examines the chaos in Iraq, the rise of ISIS and the U.S. role in the conflict. Part One revisits FRONTLINE reporting on U.S. missteps in Iraq since 2003, and how, as American troops withdrew, the stage was set for a deadly adversary to rise up.

U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq in 2011, ending America’s military commitment in the country. Now, chaos is once again engulfing Iraq. The team behind “The Torture Question” and “Bush’s War” Part 1 & Part 2 takes a look at how we got here, what went wrong, and what happens next.

Norm & Company: Albert Paley On-Demand

Albert Paley, one of the world’s best-known metal sculptors, joins WXXI President Norm Silverstein for an episode of Norm & Company.

Paley has been described as a boundary-pusher – not just because of the size of his sculptures, but because of his architectural sensibilities and his unique designs. In 2013 WXXI had the honor of chronicling his Park Avenue Project, where he created 13 sculptures for an outdoor exhibit on one of Manhattan’s best known streets. You can watch the six-part web series and the full-length documentary online at WXXI.org/paleynyc.

Paley talks with Silverstein about his work and upcoming projects, why he has made his home and his studio in Rochester, and what he thinks is Rochester’s best-kept secret.

Norm & Company is hosted by WXXI President Norm Silverstein, who speaks with long-time Rochesterians as they recount fascinating stories about their lives in the community.
