Eastman at 100: A Centennial Celebration On-Demand

Take a look back at the story of Eastman School of Music and how George Eastman’s vision for a school dedicated to scholarship, musicianship, and an inclusive community campus came to be. 

Filmed over the course of three years, Eastman at 100 follows individual students throughout their academic year, offering a firsthand look at their transformational experiences. Eastman’s story is told through intimate interviews with professors, administrators, staff, community partners, and high-profile alumni, including:

  • World-renowned, Grammy-winning soprano Renée Fleming ’83 (MM), ’11 (Honorary)
  • Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts ’94, ’99E (DMA)
  • Grammy-winning drummer Steve Gadd ’68, ’17 (Honorary)
  • Grammy-nominated jazz composer and conductor Maria Schneider ’85 (MM)
  • Retired “Voice of the Met” and former WXXI Classical host Mary Jo Heath ’88 (Ph.D.)

Emmy award-winning composer and conductor Mark Watters, who is Director of the Beal Institute for Film Music and Contemporary Media, wrote and composed the score for the documentary. Support for this documentary was provided by Dawn F. Lipson.

Veterans Connections PBS LearningMedia Collections & Military Families Resources

These videos, images, and media-rich lesson plans are from PBS LearningMedia New York , a service of WXXI Public Broadcasting in partnership with the NY State Public Media stations and PBS. This collection of resources will allow educators to bring stories from the battlefront into American history, world history, and health classrooms. They will also help students to better understand veterans and their contributions.

Explore the similarities and differences in veterans’ memories of World War II and Vietnam to uncover how these wars shaped American culture. Analyze artifacts and oral histories that reveal important experiences of a nation during times of conflict. Use recent veterans’ personal stories to engage in a discussion of how the choice to become a soldier and the experience of serving relate to personal values and goals. You will find content in the Experiencing War, World War II, Vietnam War, and Iraq & Afghanistan sub-collections.

Lest We Forget: A Survivor’s Story On-Demand

WWII veteran Gustav Potthoff survived brutal conditions in a Japanese slave labor camp in Thailand, which later inspired him to paint scenes from his dark past to heal.

Lest We Forget: A Survivor’s Story follows the journey of Gustav Pothoff from his birth in Indonesia to hellish conditions as a prisoner of war (POW). Even after the war was over, Pothoff was left haunted by the scarring experience. The veteran soon found painting to be an effective release for these emotions, and created spiritual scenes of POW camp life.

Family, friends, and museum curators all recognize the importance of Pothoff’s work in it’s rich historcal and cultural value.

 To acknowledge a major anniversary related to America’s involvement in the war in Vietnam, Connections discusses Operation Babylift. Listen to the full program audio on-demand.

In 1975, 2700 Vietnamese babies and children were evacuated to the US mainland in Operation Babylift. Another 1300 went to Canada, Australia and Europe.

Forty years later we speak with some of those adoptees about their lives, and with adoptive parents and veterans who were involved in this major turning point.

Our guests:

  • Greg Hodges, airlift adoptee who grew up in Cohocton, New York
  • Tia Keevil, airlift adoptee who is now a nurse in New York City
  • Lana Noone, adoptive parent who’s first adoptive daughter, Heather, passed away not long after arriving in the U.S.; her other daughter, Jennie, was the last baby placed through the Operation Babylift.
  • Sister Mary Nell Gage, was in Vietnam between 1973-75 and was stationed at the Presidio during Operation Babylift
  • Bill Terrell, a Vietnam veteran who helped rebuild an orphanage destroyed during the war when he was on active service
