WXXI to acquire CITY Newspaper

As you may have heard, we are kicking off 2019 with a good news story about independent media in our community. WXXI has signed a letter of intent to acquire CITY Newspaper and its digital platforms. Mary Anna and Bill Towler, founders and co-publishers of CITY Newspaper, approached WXXI with the desire to extend the service of the newspaper beyond their eventual retirement. They said that WXXI, with its like-minded mission of service to the community, was the perfect partner. The goal is to allow WXXI to better serve our community through enhanced coverage of arts and culture, education, neighborhoods, and events. It’s an example of what a modern media organization should be!

From WXXI News' Inclusion Desk comes a podcast about eight young people with disabilities transitioning into adulthood

This month our news department has launched a new podcast called Exited, which introduces listeners to a group of teens with disabilities who are transitioning into adulthood. The podcast is led by reporter Karen Shakerdge from WXXI News’ Inclusion Desk, which is a multi-platform reporting effort to inform and transform attitudes and behavior about inclusion.

As our community faces an opioid problem, Second Opinion brings you an evening of valuable information

According to state and local health departments, the number of deaths related to opioid and heroin use is on the rise in Monroe County. To shed light on what law enforcement and health care providers are calling an “epidemic”, WXXI-TV and its national healthcare series Second Opinion will devote an evening of special programming on the issue on Thursday, October 26th.

Remind Congress that you value federal funding at Protect My Public Media

This week, the House of Representatives will debate a spending package for next year. The bill currently includes public media funding but it’s important that we continue to engage our lawmakers to push this vital funding past the finish line.
