The Great Escaper on Masterpiece • WXXI-TV

The Great Escaper tells the true story of Bernard Jordan, who made global headlines in the summer of 2014. He had staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary.

The Great Escaper airs Sunday, March 15 at 9:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV and streaming on the WXXI and PBS apps.

Michael Caine and the late, two-time Oscar® winner Glenda Jackson star as Bernard Jordan and his wife, Rene. Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene. While Bernie is on his trip to Normandy, Rene recalls their younger days and falling in love during World War II.

Bernie’s story captured the imagination of the world as he embodied the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitized retelling of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war. The Great Escaper celebrates Bernie and Rene’s enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.

Rick Steves’ Heart of Italy • WXXI-TV

Join Rick Steves as he delves deep into the Italian heartland.

Rick Steves’ Heart of Italy airs Saturday, November 22 at 4 p.m. on WXXI-TV.

In Rick Steves’ Heart of Italy, Rick delves deep into the Italian heartland – the place where la dolce vita is a way of life. Starting in Umbria, he connects with rustic, traditional culture: sleeping at an agriturismo (a farmhouse inn), seeing how prosciutto and pecorino cheese are made (and eaten), and hiking down into ancient and fragrant wine cellars. Then he tours Assisi, with its inspirational story of St. Francis, its stop-and-smell-God’s-roses spirituality, its delicate Giotto masterpieces, and its awe-inspiring basilica. In Siena, Rick enjoys a front-row seat at its wild horse race – the venerable Palio – and marvels at cultural treasures from the city’s glory days, when it rivaled Florence for dominance in Tuscany. He finishes with the ultimate Riviera getaway: the Cinque Terre, where he gets to know each of the ‘five lands’ – from the dramatic, vineyard-surrounded Vernazza to hardscrabble Riomaggiore, to the pint-sized resort of Monterosso. Fishing for anchovies, sipping wine out of rustic barrels, bringing flowers to hilltop cemeteries, and savoring twinkling Mediterranean vistas, Rick visits his favorite stretch of Mediterranean coastline. From hill towns to harbors, and from vino rosso to Giotto, Rick Steves’ Heart of Italy savors the good life in the Italian heartland.

Breaking Enigma: A World War II Game Changer • WXXI-TV

The story of breaking the unbreakable German Enigma Code by Alan Turing during WWII.

Breaking Enigma: A World War II Game Changer airs Sunday, November 9 at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV and streams live on the WXXI app.

The breaking of Germany’s top-secret Enigma Code at Bletchley Park in the United Kingdom was one of World War II’s biggest secrets, alongside the construction of the atomic bombs. Some historians estimate that deciphering the German military code shortened the war by two years and possibly saved 14 million lives. Though the Enigma was deemed unbreakable, a British mathematician named Alan Turing spearheaded the initiative to achieve the impossible and succeeded unbeknownst to the German military. Narrated by Keith Morrison of Dateline and filmed on location in England and the United States, Breaking Enigma: A World War II Game Changer tells this heroic story in detail through a combination of interviews with historians, veterans and modern scientists.

Great Performances – Tiler Peck: Suspending Time offers a deeply personal look at one of ballet’s most celebrated artists as she faces a career crossroads. Directed by Alex Ramsey, the film follows Peck over the course of six years of her life, capturing rehearsals, performances and quiet moments of reflection, as she fights to return stronger, not just as a prima ballerina, but also as a choreographer and creative force. After Peck returns to the stage, she takes on the toughest creative challenge of her career: A prestigious invitation to choreograph for the New York City Ballet, culminating in debut performances set to a concerto by Francis Poulenc. Featuring original work by Peck alongside choreography from Alonzo King, William Forsythe, George Balanchine and Christopher Wheeldon, the film blends vulnerability and resilience with artistic brilliance.
