Join WXXI Education and The Local History & Genealogy Division of the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County for a special virtual screening and chat about the Finding Your Roots Series with a focus on conducting family history by people of color. Learn about local resources and local stories.

What: Virtual Screening of stories from Finding Your Roots Season 7 followed by a chat with local panelists that are researching their own family histories. 

Who Should Attend: Anyone interested in family history, genealogy, and resources to support these activities

When: Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. ET

Host: Marion French, WXXI Vice President, Education & Interactive Services

Moderator: Christine L. Ridarsky, City Historian and Historical Services Consultant, The Local History & Genealogy Division of the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County  

Panelists:

Barb Koehler: Genealogy Specialist at The Local History & Genealogy Division of the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County: Barb runs weekly Genealogy sessions and 1-to-1 appointments currently via ZOOM to assist people with genealogy research

Cheryl Sampson: Cheryl Sampson's interest in genealogy was inherited from her mother, who was inspired by the 1977  Roots miniseries to document their family's history. Starting where her mother left off, she has been filling in the gaps for the past eight years. After working for Xerox for 24 years, she is currently working toward a master's degree in the Public History program at SUNY Brockport and volunteering as the coordinator of historical interpretation for Rochester's proposed Civil Rights Historical Site.

Gloria Read: Gloria Read’s interest in genealogy research started when she joined the Kodak Genealogy Club in the 1990’s. She has a Daughter and a Son along with 6 Grandchildren. She would like to complete a Family History Book to share with her family. Gloria is an Eastman Kodak Company retiree of 25 years and has been doing volunteering for some years. She has a Master of Science Degree in Management from Keuka College and enjoys Alumni events.

Jerry Bunton: Jerry and Karen L. Bunton have been preserving family memorabilia and tracing their family roots for decades. Their collections and research form the basis of Everyday People: The Dinkle Family and Rochester’s African American Past, an exhibit at the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County. Jerry is a retired industrial millwright; Karen is a retired secretary and a "mother" of the Renewal of Life Church of God in Christ.

Bill Castle: Bill Castle has been a local genealogy enthusiast for over 20 years and makes use of local resources, like the library in his family history research. He has also travelled to the region where his family was from to use print resources and connect with local genealogy resources there.
