10/2     From the great state of Iowa, we meet an outstanding teenage composer from Iowa City and a top-ranking competitive swimmer who is also an exceptional pianist.

10/9     To celebrate our 10th Anniversary season, we welcome back a violinist who was on our show ten years ago, and who has since undertaken the task of "changing the world through music." You'll also meet a nine-year-old flutist from Virginia who performs Cecile Chaminade's Concertino and a uniquely talented 17-year-old countertenor from California, who sings a da capo aria by Handel.

10/16   From the Top features a teenage violinist who was the 2010 Sphinx Competition Junior Division Winner and the Norman North High School Chorale, directed by Tony Gonzalez.

10/23   From the stage of the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, Massachusetts we feature a talented teenage string quartet and an outstanding 8-year-old pianist.

10/30   From the beautiful town of Burlington, Vermont, we meet a talented youth orchestra and an exceptional teenage composer whose piece is performed by a bassoon quartet.

10/23   The Three Hymnwriters We’ll explore the writings of three seminal hymnwriters of the seventeenth century: Philipp Nicolai, Johann Heermann and Paul Gerhardt.

10/30            Reformation Sunday We’ll listen to a variety of music that grew out of this landmark event in the history of the Christian Church. Listen for music of Luther, and those who followed on this edition of With Heart and Voice.

10/5     The biennial Berkeley Festival and Exhibition celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2010 by highlighting the magnificence of early Italian music, from the glories of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice to the haunting spiritual cloisters of Milan. Presented by the San Francisco Early Music Society, in collaboration with many partners, the Festival and Exhibition keeps the churches, chapels, and concert halls of Berkeley filled with ancient music from early morning through midnight.

10/12   Seattle is known for its verdant evergreens, dramatic coastlines, and of course, coffee. However, the Emerald City is home to so much more than nature loving hikers, avid bicyclists, and baristas who create masterpieces in a cup with hot milk. It’s also a hotspot for those passionately obsessed with classical music. Take the American Handel Festival as an example. While the American Handel Society typically meets biannually for an academic conference and a few concerts, when they came to Seattle in 2011, the result was a three-week, citywide festival, incorporating some 30 concerts and a host of lectures, symposia, and educational activities with the help of over 26 collaborating organizations.

10/1            Wisdom In The Strings We explore contemporary and traditional music conveying wisdom from ancient times this week. Featured are Celtic-tinged arrangements of the sacred chants of Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) and William Jackson's music developed from a medieval manuscript, created on a tiny Scottish island in the 13th century.

10/8            Harlaw Scotland 1411 Music and song have carried the story of the Battle of Harlaw through the centuries. Fiddler Bonnie Rideout and a gathering of musicians have recorded ancient music commemorating the 600th anniversary of the battle. Travel back in time with them and music historian John Purser who tells us of this legendary conflict in the age-old struggle between war and peace.

10/15   Tucked Away Celtic musicians are often interested in forging a global fusion. Here are some that also strive to preserve distinct regional voices. They include flute player Cathal McConnell's with a collection of old field recordings and more hidden treasures with singers Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh and Christine Kydd, and fiddlers Pete Clark and Chris Stout.
