Leonard Bernstein: America’s Music Teacher

(Rochester, NY) – Classical 91.5 celebrates the centennial of American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein with special programming throughout the month, including Leonard Bernstein: America’s Music Teacher – airing Monday, August 20 at 1 p.m. In this two-hour special, host Andrea Blain looks at Bernstein’s novel and eclectic approach to teaching. We’ll hear works by Beethoven, Mahler, Debussy, Ives and Copland which demonstrates Bernstein’s approach to musical style, form and content.

Pipedreams: Remembering Lenny  airs Sunday, August 26 at 8 p.m.
A centenary tribute to one of America’s most original composers and profoundly influential musicians, Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990).

Exploring Music airs Monday, August 20-Friday, August 25 at 7 p.m.
Host Bill McGlaughlin visited the 6th annual Tucson Desert Song Festival for their celebration of “Leonard Bernstein at 100.” George Hanson, artistic director of the festival, welcomed Bill to a week of lectures, workshops, master classes, and along with beautiful performances of Candide, Trouble in Tahiti, Mass, and the Kaddish Symphony, featuring a new narration written and performed by the maestro’s daughter, Jamie Bernstein.

Bernstein: From Broadway to Hollywood airs Friday, August 25 at 5 p.m.
Host Lynne Warfel presents a musical celebration of Bernstein’s works for stage and screen, including Candide, On the Town and West Side Story.
