On Home Ground: Life After Service

(Rochester, NY) – On Home Ground: Life After Service, airing Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV, takes an intimate look into the lives of three veterans who returned home to the Adirondacks after deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, and asks the question, after all the sacrifice, when does home finally feel like home again?

On Home Ground takes viewers on a journey of re-assimilation into civilian life with veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars living along the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. Their small hometowns are scenic and peaceful, but also remote and isolating. The physical distance means limited access to essentials like healthcare, and a struggling local economy contributes to the widespread unemployment for veterans. Years after coming back, each vet reflects on their homecoming, rebuilding relationships, grappling with physical and mental changes, and finding a unique, grounding camaraderie among fellow veterans.

This program is part of WXXI’s Veterans Connections initiative, which is designed to link veterans in our region with needed community support and services. Through special TV, radio and online programming, documentary films, group discussions, news features, and a comprehensive web site (WXXI.org/veterans), Veterans Connections builds a community platform to raise awareness and connect veterans with valuable resources.
