A divided America has often been brought together by story, and on this special program we hear diverse voices reflecting on a diverse America.

In "The Walk," by Elizabeth Strout an older man sets out for a walk in his small New England town and ponders changes in his life and community. Ellen Burstyn reads this work by the Pulitzer Prize winner author of Olive Kittridge. Selected Shorts: I Am America airs Sunday, July 1, 2018 at 9 p.m. on AM 1370.

The second story, "Listen," by Susan Minot is a provocative collection of rumors, concerns, and perceptions about the state of our world--as if we are overhearing the whole country muttering under its breath. Jennifer Ikeda and Khris Lewin read with urgency.

And the important contributions of African-American women are celebrated in poems and speeches by Ida Wells, Mary Ashe Lee, and Sojourner Truth that were collected in the anthology The Portable Nineteenth-Century African American Women Writers edited by Henry Lewis Gates. They are read by Crystal Dickinson and Kaneza Schaal.
