Federal Budget Update

It’s just the beginning of the budget process, but we have some good news to share about federal funding for public media. The key House Subcommittee with jurisdiction over our budget recommended level funding of $445 million for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's (CPB) in the FY 2018 Appropriations Bill.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good news. No funding was provided for replacement of the public media “interconnection,” for which $55 million had been requested. This is disappointing and could complicate the interconnection investment process.  We’ll be working hard to secure funding in the Senate bill and throughout the rest of the appropriations process.

Also, we are still waiting to hear if funding for the critical Ready to Learn program is included in the budget. Ready to Learn includes the children’s educational programming designed to help our youngest and most vulnerable viewers to be prepared when they enter school.

If you’ve already contacted your Representative in Congress about the need to support continued funding for public media, thank you. If you’d like to weigh in, here a link to help you do so. And thank you for supporting WXXI!
