Summer travels

Summer gives you the chance to enjoy music in unusual settings.  Lakes. Woods. Corn fields. Festivals are popping up all over the region.  Last week I had the privilege of seeing four operas at Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown and interviewing the incoming director, Francesca Zambello. She has big plans for the festival, and we'll hear about those Thursday morning around 8:40 a.m. on Classical 91.5.  There's a review of the season forthcoming in City newspaper.

To the north, Canadians are working to make Niagara-on-the-Lake a music destination, "Tanglewood North."  It'll be the summer home of the Toronto Symphony.  I've been wondering how that's going. WXXI will update you in the coming weeks. 

Closer to home, Gibbs and Main will perform a concert of chamber music -- with motorcycles -- at the Roam Cafe on Sunday, August 15th.

As for today's mystery piece on WXXI, you can almost see the champagne bubbles when you hear this Viennese composer’s work.  It's from an opera that premiered in 1905, uncorking its creator’s fame.
