Several years ago, a man appeared at WXXI’s front desk with a substantial donation.

The receptionist called Norm Silverstein, WXXI’s president and CEO, so he could come hear the donor’s story. The man said his wife implored him not to save her wedding ring as a keepsake if she died. He followed through on his wife’s wish to sell the ring and donate the money to her beloved WXXI.

The president of PBS has retold this story, Silverstein said, because it strikes at the heart of what keeps not-for-profit stations like WXXI thriving.
