(Rochester, NY) December 29, 2015 – WXXI has installed a new transmitter to power its WXXI-FM station. The 30,000 watt Gates-Air Flex transmitter provides long-term reliable service and increased clarity of sound for Classical 91.5 listeners in the greater Rochester area. Classical 91.5 is Rochester's only all-classical public radio station, broadcasting locally hosted classical music and concerts from around the world every day.

The new transmitter also enhances power for WXXI’s HD digital radio services.  This includes:  FM HD 91.5-1, which broadcasts classical music programming heard on FM Classical 91.5 and FM HD 91.5-2, which broadcasts news and information programming heard on AM 1370. Digital radio offers a dramatically higher quality audio and is not subject to seasonal pattern changes like AM radio.

The new transmitter also provides solid service for WXXI Reachout Radio, a radio reading service that provides 24-hour per day readings of local and national newspapers, magazines, and books for people who are print-handicapped.

The FM transmitter was made possible by a gift to WXXI’s Go Public Campaign, a comprehensive campaign to strengthen WXXI’s programs and services to better serve our community now and in the future.
