A jaw dropping story about one unforgettable athlete Kevin Pearce.

In 2009, American snowboarding champion Kevin Pearce was enjoying the most successful competitive season of his career, winning several events and challenging the dominance of his friend-turned-rival, the legendary Shaun White. But on Dec. 31, while riding the slopes of Park City, Utah in final training for the 2010 Winter Olympics, he suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma, followed by a long road of adjusting to what would be a lifelong disability.

Directed by two-time Oscar® nominee Lucy Walker, THE CRASH REEL is an exhilarating ride through the world of Pearce, whose story underscores the high stakes for extreme sports stars. This riveting tale takes surprising turns as it follows his close-knit family and friends, drawing on footage filmed over two decades, from 232 different sources, that captures the soul of the sport. THE CRASH REEL screens at the Little Theatre on Tuesday, January 14 at 7 p.m. as part of the theatre's ONE TAKE doc series and Dialogue on Disability, a partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies, which is supported by the Golisano Foundation and part of Al Sigl’s Herman and Margaret Schwartz Community Series, funded by the Fred L. Emerson Foundation. See details about Dialogue on Disability below. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Mary L. Dombovy, MD, MHSA, and Vice President of Neurosciences Unity Health System. Tickets are $10.

One Take: Stories through the Lens is a monthly Tuesday night documentary series held at the Little, hosted by Linda Moroney. The series presents a unique mix of documentaries—ranging from film festival favorites to unheralded gems—followed by talkback discussions.

Dialogue on Disability, an annual outreach partnership with WXXI and the Al Sigl Community of Agencies, designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with physical and intellectual disabilities, expands from a week-long initiative to a year-long one. It was always our hope that the conversation would continue beyond the campaign’s seven days and now thanks to support from the Golisano Foundation it will. Together we will offer TV and radio programming, news features, film screenings with talk backs, and other special offerings throughout the year.
