 A “One Take: Stories Through the Lens” Series, June 14-16

(Rochester, New York) May 1, 2013 – The Little Theatre brings D.A. Pennebaker, one of the most influential documentary filmmakers of all time, to Rochester on June 14th for a weekend music film series. Pennebaker will introduce several of his films, including Don’t Look Back, which has been hailed the greatest rock documentary of all time. He will also take part in two Q&A sessions hosted by Rochester’s own film critic Jack Garner. The festival kicks off Friday, June 14 at 6:30 p.m. with a screening of Don’t Look Back. The film captures both the public and private persona of the notoriously elusive musician Bob Dylan during his 1963 English tour. The evening will also include Pennebaker’s first short, Daybreak Express, a dynamic portrait of New York City, filmed from the elevated third avenue train line. After the screenings, Pennebaker will take to the stage to answer questions fielded by Garner. Tickets for this event are $15 for general admission, $10 for students, seniors, and members.

Also on Friday at 9:30 p.m. Pennebaker will introduce his 1973 film, Ziggy Stardust, which captures David Bowie’s last concert with the Ziggy persona and the Spiders from Mars. Tickets for this show are $8 for general admission, $5 for students, seniors, and members.

On Saturday, June 15 at 1 p.m. the Little presents Monterey Pop, a 1968 film of the Monterey Pop Festival of 1967, which includes performances by Jimmy Hendrix and Janice Joplin. The afternoon will also feature a screening of Dave Lambert, a short that documents Dave Lambert’s 1964 audition for George Avakian and RCA in their studios. After the screenings, Pennebaker will participate in a Q&A session with Garner. Tickets for this event are $15 general admission and $10 for students, seniors, and members.

Also on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. movie goers can catch an encore of Don’t Look Back. The weekend concludes with an encore of Ziggy Stardust on Sunday, June 16 at 9:30 p.m. Tickets for these screenings are $8 for general admission, $5 for students, seniors, and members.

Pennebaker is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of cinema verite filmmaking. He and his colleague Richard Leacock developed one of the first fully portable 16mm synchronized camera and sound recording systems which revolutionized filmmaking and helped to create the immediate style of shooting so popular today. Pennebaker is the recipient of numerous filmmaking awards including the IFP’s Gotham Award and the 2012 lifetime-achievement Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

This Pennebaker music film fest is part of the Little’s “One Take: Stories Through the Lens,” series, that features a unique mix of documentaries followed by discussions.  “One Take” is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
