(Rochester, New York) June 3, 2013 – WXXI’s Innovation Trail, a team of journalists dedicated to reporting on the economy and technology in upstate New York, received an Award of Excellence and a Special Mention from the New York chapter of the Associated Press. The awards were presented at the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association’s annual awards ceremony in Saratoga Springs, New York on Saturday, June 1, 2013.
Innovation Trail’s “Health Care Innovation” series took home an Award of Excellence in the “Best News Series” category. Stories included features on telemedicine and e-records, innovations that are setting the pace for much of the nation. Contributing reporters included Marie Cusick, Ryan Delaney, Kate O'Connell, Matt Richmond, and Joanna Richards.
“Investigating IDAs,” a series of reports that investigated how industrial development agencies (IDAs) spend New Yorkers’ tax dollars, received a Special Mention in the “Best Enterprise Reporting” category. Contributing reporters in this series included Emma Jacobs, Daniel Robison, Ryan Delaney, Matt Richmond, and Marie Cusick.
These awards come on the heels of Innovation Trail’s Editor Matthew Leonard and Facilitator Juan Vazquez receiving the RocCity Rising “Established Leader Award” in recognition of their contributions to the entrepreneurial community in Rochester through their work on The Innovation Trail. A collaboration of Rochester’s young professional organizations, the RocCity Coalition hosts RocCity Rising Awards each year to spotlight young professionals helping to strengthen the emergence of downtown Rochester.
The Innovation Trail is a collaboration between six upstate New York public media outlets, led by WXXI, along with WBFO/WNED, WRVO, WSKG, WMHT and North Country Public Radio. The initiative, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), helps the public gain a better understanding of the connection between technological breakthroughs and the revitalization of upstate New York's economy. Reports focus on research, development, education, funding, and policy issues around emerging fields like energy, information technology, biotech, nanotech, and photonics.
