(Rochester, New York) June 26, 2013 – WXXI-TV presents a new summer line-up in primetime programming on Thursdays and Fridays in July. Need to Know Rochester, WXXI’saward-winning weekly news and public affairs programmoves from Friday nights to Thursdays at 8 p.m. beginning July 11th. Hosted by Hélène Biandudi Hofer, the program provides balanced and in-depth coverage on community issues that matter to Rochesterians. The McLaughlin Group and New York Now, also part of our Friday night schedule, will move to Sundays at 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively, beginning July 7th.

A new line-up for Friday night includes the premiere of Charlie Rose: The Week on Friday, July 19 at 8:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Emmy Award-winning journalist Charlie Rose launches this new series that looks at some of the best stories and his interviews of the week seen on Charlie Rose, which airs weeknights at 11 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Charlie Rose: The Week will also look to the week ahead in politics, business, culture, and the arts.

In addition to the new Charlie Rose show, WXXI will dedicate the 9 o’clock hour on Friday nights to the arts with a series of programs that spotlight dance, theatre, music and visual arts. This includes:

  • The Cleveland Orchestra in Performance: Boulez Conducts Mahler l Friday, July 5 at 9 p.m. Pierre Boulez conducts Gustav Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No. 10 in F-Sharp Major and “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”, Songs for Voice and Orchestra, with soloists Magdalena Kožená, mezzo-soprano, and baritone Christian Gerhaher. 
  • American Masters “A Letter to Elia” l Friday, July 12 at 9 p.m. For Martin Scorsese, growing up in Little Italy, seeing On the Waterfront and East of Eden as a young man was a life-changing experience. Scorsese appears on and off camera throughout A Letter to Elia, taking us through Elia Kazan’s life and through his own as well, and through his growing realization that there was an artist behind the camera, someone “who knew me, maybe better than I knew myself.”
  • Shaw Festival: Behind the Curtain lFriday, July 19 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Enjoy this behind-the scenes documentary on the Shaw Festival, one of North America's longest running, most distinctive, and exciting theater experiences. Between April and October, the Shaw Festival presents 11 plays on four stages that attract patrons from all over the world.
  • Great Performances “Dancing at Jacob’s Pillow: Never Stand Still” lFriday, July 26 at 9 p.m. Directed by veteran documentary filmmaker Ron Honsa, this special reveals the passion, discipline, and daring of those who choose a life in dance.
