StoryCorps
StoryCorps is in Rochester
StoryCorps, a national initiative to document everyday history and the unique stories of Americans, was in Rochester in July 2009. WXXI invited StoryCorps to Rochester to capture the stories of Rochesterians as part of the celebration of the City’s 175 Anniversary.
The renowned oral-history project brings stories to visual life in six documentary shorts. StoryCorps animated shorts premiere on Tuesday, August 17 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT 21.1/cable 1011 and 11) with Danny and Annie. Read More.

It’s Thursday, the day we hear stories that were recorded here in Rochester last summer by StoryCorps, the national oral history project. Today we hear from Anthony Venturo and his son Michael. Their visit to the mobile recording booth gave Anthony the chance to about what it was like to grow up during World War Two.

When she was just 15 years old, Lydia Timmons left school to go to work full time, because the economic downturn had severely affected her mother and 9 brothers. That was in 1941. Last summer when the StoryCorps oral history project came to Rochester, Lydia visited the Mobile Recording Booth with her daughter, Mary Graupman, to talk about what life was like in Rochester at the end of the Great Depression.

Elizabeth Gocker moved to Rochester with her husband Paul in 1946. When the StoryCorps oral history project came to Rochester last summer, she talked with her friend David Sliney about the transition to living in the Flower City.

About the Visit
The StoryCorps MobileBooth – an Airstream trailer outfitted with a recording studio – was in residence at the Rundel Library, and over 200 people shared their memories and experiences. Two or three of the stories may be selected for national broadcast. WXXI will air most of the Rochester stories locally during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
Beginning September 10, 2009, StoryCorps Rochester began to air each Thursday at 6:35 am, 8:35 am and 5:45 pm on WXXI-AM 1370, WRUR-FM 88.5, or WXXI-FM 91.5 HD2. These stories will also be available above and as a podcast after the broadcast date.
