Esteban Salas, born in La Habana, Cuba, in 1725 and José Joaquim Emerico Lobo de Mesquita, born in Vila do Principe, Brasil, in 1746, were two of the most talented composers in the last part of the 18th century. Both were trained to perform and to compose religious music, both became music director in important cathedrals and both were ordained priest at an old age.
