A New Documentary About Fred Rogers is a Must-See

My wife and I went to see “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” the wonderful documentary film about Fred Rogers, at the Little Theatre recently. There were more than a few tears shed that night by people who grew up with “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” or who watched the show with their children and grandchildren. Fred Rogers reminded all of us that a little kindness can make a big difference – something we could all use a lot more of today.

It was always a pleasure to hear Fred Rogers speak at PBS meetings and to meet many of his cast members. Fred was credited with saving PBS in its early years through his appearance at a Senate budget hearing where he talked about the importance of children’s television (the film clip from the hearing is included in the movie).

I would argue that educational children’s television is needed today more than ever. I’m especially proud that WXXI is a leader in children’s television, including our new 24/7 Kids Channel. Our programs have a “Ready to Learn” message to help kids be prepared when they enter school.  If you’d like to learn more about the many ways WXXI supports education throughout our community, please visit our website: WXXI.org/education.

"Won't You Be My Neighbor" is still playing at the Little, and I encourage you to go see it. Click here for dates and times.
