A New Documentary About Fred Rogers is a Must-See

My wife and I went to see “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” the wonderful documentary film about Fred Rogers, at the Little Theatre recently. There were more than a few tears shed that night by people who grew up with “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” or who watched the show with their children and grandchildren. Fred Rogers reminded all of us that a little kindness can make a big difference – something we could all use a lot more of today.

It was always a pleasure to hear Fred Rogers speak at PBS meetings and to meet many of his cast members. Fred was credited with saving PBS in its early years through his appearance at a Senate budget hearing where he talked about the importance of children’s television (the film clip from the hearing is included in the movie).

I would argue that educational children’s television is needed today more than ever. I’m especially proud that WXXI is a leader in children’s television, including our new 24/7 Kids Channel. This week we kick off Dialogue on Disability, one of our annual initiatives of which I am most proud. For more than a decade we have partnered with Al Sigl Community of Agencies to provide special programs that spotlight "the abilities of people with disabilities”.  The initiative was designed to encourage dialogue about the vital role inclusion plays in our community.

WXXI Goes Public with its Capital Campaign

On Thursday, October 30th we officially kicked off the public phase of our “Go Public” Campaign. We intend to raise $17 million to ensure that WXXI and the Little Theatre can continue to meet the needs of our community for generations to come.
