WRUR/WXXI Voted Rochester's Best Radio Station

WXXI’s new “Go Public” campaign received a boost when Rochester “went public” by voting WRUR/WXXI as favorite radio station in City Newspaper’s “Best of Rochester 2009” Awards!  If you voted for us, thank you (and thanks to our friends at City, too)!  We were also pleased that our own Scott Regan, host of “Open Tunings” on WRUR 88.5, received a “Critics’ Picks” for “Best Reason to be Late for Work.”  Also, WXXI Honorary Trustee Betty Strasenburgh received a “Critics’ Picks” for “Best Torchbearer,” for her ongoing efforts to promote the restoration of the Eastman Theatre.

More and more people are discovering how important public radio is in their daily lives. Whether it’s new and eclectic music on WRUR 88.5, classical music on Classical 91.5, or the in-depth local and national news on AM 1370 and WRUR, the Greater Rochester area is choosing to “Go Public.”

We don’t take that loyalty for granted either. As we look to continue strengthening those services, WXXI is pleased to announce the addition of Steve Dawe as Director of Multimedia Engagement. Steve – well known to the Rochester community through his role as news director for 13WHAM -TV – joins the WXXI Center for Public Affairs news team. He will focus on merging WXXI’s news and public affairs content across all platforms including broadcast, digital, online and mobile. In integrating those stories for discussion on, Steve will develop social media strategies to increase community engagement. This is a new position in the news department – a role we felt was important to create as we strive to remain vital and innovative in our community.

As I meet with my colleagues in public media from all parts of the country, I am always pleased that Rochester continues to be ahead of the curve in the area of technology and innovation.  What I find, time and time again, is when stations share their innovative success stories; they are similar to projects or activities already underway at WXXI.  Whether it’s about increasing community involvement, providing responsive local programming or creating a robust on-line gathering place for the sharing of ideas – WXXI has been leading the way for some time.

Clearly, over the last month, from your votes in the City balloting and your pledges of support during our radio membership campaign, you have let us know that we are headed in the right direction.  Please continue to share your thoughts with us.  You can click on the respond button at the bottom of this page and let us know what’s on your mind, or visit us on Facebook where you can become a fan of WXXI and let your voice be heard.

Best wishes for the upcoming holiday season from all of us at WXXI!
