We recently had the pleasure of hosting in Rochester PBS Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman and Emmy award-winning filmmaker Ann Johnson Prum for a visit in anticipation of their three-part series Nature: America Spring LIVE, which premieres at the end of this month.

March is “Music in Our Schools Month,” a national celebration designed to engage music educators, students, and communities to promote the benefits of music education programs in schools.

As you may have heard, we are kicking off 2019 with a good news story about independent media in our community. WXXI has signed a letter of intent to acquire CITY Newspaper and its digital platforms. Mary Anna and Bill Towler, founders and co-publishers of CITY Newspaper, approached WXXI with the desire to extend the service of the newspaper beyond their eventual retirement.

As we approach the end of 2018, I’d like to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year. In addition to compelling programming from NPR, PBS and the Little Theatre, we are proud of the work we do to engage with our community. I’m pleased to share a few highlights from the year.

You may remember the Opioid Crisis: The Ripple Effect reporting series that our news team produced last April in partnership with several major media stations, one in Portland, Oregon, the other in Cleveland, Ohio.

If you were among those affected by the technical problems we experienced last month with our television transmitter, thank you for your patience. Our engineers worked literally around-the-clock to resolve the problems, with additional teams coming from as far away as Kansas City. We take access to our programming seriously and regret the disruptions to over-the-air viewers.

My wife and I went to see “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” the wonderful documentary film about Fred Rogers, at the Little Theatre recently. There were more than a few tears shed that night by people who grew up with “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” or who watched the show with their children and grandchildren.

If you have a thirst for adventure this summer, we may have just the thing for you! I’m pleased to announce that WXXI is presenting a new series that spotlights the craft beer revolution happening in our town and across New York State. Brewed in New York premieres Thursday, July 5 at 8:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV, as well as on public broadcasting stations across New York State.

June marks the one year anniversary of the unveiling of the Little Theatre’s newly renovated Marquee. On June 12, 2017 the Marquee reclaimed its place as a beacon in the East End Cultural District, and we were joined by neighbors, friends, and supporters to celebrate the relighting with a great street party.

Please join me in congratulating WXXI News for receiving two “Excellence in Broadcasting” awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association. Our Exited podcast garnered the award in the ‘Outstanding Use of Digital Platforms’ category.
