StoryCorps

StoryCorps arrived in Rochester this week. Its mission is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening. This radio program of the same name, airing Friday, July 3 at 1:30 p.m. and again at 11:30 p.m. on AM1370/HD91.5-2, introduces listeners to the oral history project, provides its history and shares some memorable stories.
StoryCorps is the largest oral history project of its kind. Since 2003, almost 30,000 everyday people have shared life stories with family and friends in our StoryBooths. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the Library of Congress. Everybody’s story matters. Every life counts. StoryCorps is reaching out to record our history, hopes, and common humanity—and illuminate the true character of this nation.
WXXI invited StoryCorps to Rochester to capture the stories of Rochesterians as part of the celebration of the City’s 175 Anniversary. The StoryCorps MobileBooth -- an Airstream trailer outfitted with a recording studio -- will be parked outside the Rundel Library at the corner of Broad Street and South Avenue from July 2 until July 25, and will be open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Rochester Public Library has graciously donated this space for StoryCorps to utilize as it collects at least 120 interviews during its stay in Rochester. The first round of reservations opened June 18. A second round is scheduled for Friday, July 3 at 10 a.m., and can be made by calling toll free 800-850-4406 or going online at www.storycorps.org.
You can hear StoryCorps stories on AM 1370/HD91.5-2 and WRUR-FM 88.5 during Morning Edition at 6:25 and 8:25 a.m.
WXXI will host an Opening Day event on Thursday, July 2 beginning at 10:30 a.m. (at the corner of Broad Street and South Avenue) to introduce the project to the community and allow press and the public to tour the booth, speak to the StoryCorps staff, and hear from the first set of participants who will interview on the day of the event.
