Fri, 01/08/2021 - 5:00pm - Sun, 01/31/2021 - 10:00pm

Presented as part of Dialogue on Disability and Move to Include, this film examines the lives of five young people who live with autism spectrum disorder.

WXXI, Al Sigl Community of Agencies, and the Golisano Foundation are pleased to bring you this film, The Reason I Jump, at The Virtual Little free of charge throughout January. Based on the best-selling book by Naoki Higashida, The Reason I Jump is an immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity through the experiences of nonspeaking autistic people from around the world. Watch the film and then join us for a virtual panel discussion on Tuesday, January 26 at 6 p.m. on WXXI's Facebook page (see below for details).

More about the film:
Moments in the lives of each of the characters are linked by the journey of a young Japanese boy through an epic landscape; narrated passages from Naoki’s writing reflect on what his autism means to him and others, how his perception of the world differs, and why he acts in the way he does: the reason he jumps. The film distills these elements into a sensually rich tapestry that leads us to Naoki’s core message: not being able to speak does not mean there is nothing to say.

More about the panel discussion:
Hosted by Evan Dawson of WXXI News’ Connections, our panel will include the film's director Jerry Rothwell, along with special guests from the Golisano Autism Center. We'll also hear from Al Sigl Community of Agencies President Tom O'Connor and Golisano Autism Center Director Beth Ciardi.

Dialogue on Disability is a partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies –  in conjunction with the Herman and Margaret Schwartz Community Series, which celebrates people with differing abilities with a week’s worth of television and radio specials, news reports, and screenings. The initiative, which runs January 25-31, is supported by the Fred L. Emerson Foundation with additional support from The Golisano Foundation. To learn more, visit:
