American Experience "Breaking the Code: A History of Women in STEM" Virtual Event

Learn more about Elizebeth Friedman from American Experience's The Codebreaker, and her lasting legacy in cryptology and STEM at this virtual event.

Produced in conjunction with American Experience’s The Codebreaker aired on WXXI-TV earlier this month. The  Codebreaker is available on-demand. This virtual event will include an excerpt from the film and a discussion amongst participants about Elizebeth Friedman’s groundbreaking accomplishments in cryptology. And, we'll learn how her legacy lives on today in groups dedicated to increasing opportunities for young women in STEM.

  • Valeria and Kyara Torres-Olivares - Co-founders of CODE-EQUAL—a non-profit that provides free computer science courses, workshops, and tools that self-identifying girls and underrepresented minorities need to enter computer science fields and be successful. Both are alumnae of Kode with Klossy—a free coding camp for girls aged 13-18 founded by Karlie Kloss.
  • Adriane Lenz-Smith - Associate professor of history and African & African American studies at Duke University.
