Herb Smith and the Freedom Trio, one of Rochester’s premier jazz combos, take to The Little stage.

Presenting diverse musical performances paired with intimate interviews and compelling stories, HomeStage at The Little, shares the magic that happens when musicians finally come together to play once again. This week Herb Smith and the Freedom Trio take to the stage. Herb Smith, who plays with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, leads the Freedom Trio on trumpet. Peter Chwazik, a lecturer at Ithaca College, playing bass and Dana Wendel, an Eastman student, on drums completes the group.

Freedom trio emerged from their natural need to express themselves. Formed in May 2013, members of the group have a varied musical background, honed over decades of performing here and abroad. Incorporating jazz, rock, classical, blues, gospel, and Indian classical musics, to name a few, these different styles and generas play a crucial role in the creation of their original compositions. "We decided to put together the band we always wished for, but never had," explains Herb.

Freedom Trio is committed to creating new, thoughtful, and playful ways, of exploring modern improvised music, while keeping melody in the forefront. In laymens turns, the music is groovy, and sometimes weird, but you will get it, and we think you'll love it, like we do! With the use of odd rhythms, hypnotic loops, grounding bass lines, soaring trumpet melodies, and electronic enhancements, you are sure to be liberated with the Freedom Trio.
