Three-time James Beard Award-winner Pati Jinich ventures to a region of Mexico unfamiliar not only to most Americans, but to the rest of Mexico as well – Sonora, "Mexico's Great Frontier".

In the premiere episode of season 9 of Pati's Mexican Table, airing Friday, September 18 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-CREATE, you'll  tag along as a visit to Don Guerra’s bakery in Tucson, Arizona, prompts Jinich and her crew to follow the trail of the heritage wheat Guerra uses back to the wheat fields near Ciudad Obregón, in Sonora, Mexico. From there, they continue to explore Mexico’s second-largest state. Described as “the big wide open” and a place “where the desert meets the sea” by locals, Sonora borders Arizona to the north and has a coastline extending 507 miles along the Sea of Cortez.

From there, they continue to explore Mexico’s second-largest state. Described as “the big wide open” and a place “where the desert meets the sea” by locals, Sonora borders Arizona to the north and has a coastline extending 507 miles along the Sea of Cortez. As they drive north to south, Jinich takes us on a journey to help untangle the complexities of this region impacted by many misconceptions associated with border states.

Jinich, a Mexico City native who has lived in the U.S. for 20 years, has been dedicated to sharing the cuisine and culture of her home country. She says Sonora and Arizona seem to have more in common with each other than with other states in their own countries.

Pati's Mexican Table Season premiere repeats Saturday 9/19 at 10a.m., Sunday 9/20 at 9 p.m., and Monday 9/21 at 2 p.m.  on CREATE
