Meet the dynasty that ruled Britain with an iron fist.

The Stuarts – A Bloody Reign, a four-part series airs Thursday, August 13 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV, chronicles the life and legacy of four monarchs who ruled the British Isles successively for 85 years. From 1603 until 1688, the Stuart dynasty lorded over the most eventful, and bloodthirsty, period in British history.

Hosted by Professor Kate Williams (Young Victoria; Secret History of Edward VII), each of the series’ four episodes reexamines the royal house’s legacy with fresh eyes, looking at its rule through different perspectives. The series also spotlights key moments in the Stuart dynasty’s history, beginning with King James I taking the throne and unifying the Scottish and English crowns.

The Stuarts – A Bloody Reign also keys in on what was a very authoritarian era of British history, notably under the rule of Charles I, a period of religious upheaval and civil war. In the final episode, Professor Williams examines the short-lived rule of King James II, and the factors that led to the last king of a proud and powerful dynasty being deposed of so quickly.
