This series covers the dramatic moments and historical events that occurred within the walls of Balmoral Castle as Queen Elizabeth and her family lived there.

Inside Balmoral, airing Thursdays, September 19-October 3, 2019 at 10:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV, pulls the curtain back on the most secretive estate of the British royal familyHidden away in the Scottish highlands, Balmoral Estate serves as a getaway for Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royals. It is twice the size of Britain’s largest city and offers a relaxing place for the family to enjoy time together, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t hosted its fair share of dramatic moments.

The three-part documentary series starts at its establishment with its first royal owner, Queen Victoria, in the mid-1800s. Later, during World War II it’s revealed a young Queen Elizabeth spent much of her time at Balmoral. This theme of Elizabeth hiding away in the estate during stressful and uncertain times continues in episode two, after her coronation, and especially throughout a period she dubbed her “annus horriblus” in 1992.

The third and final episode sheds light on royal life in the estate from after the “annus horriblus” to 2017. Inside Balmoral expertly covers how Balmoral Estate played a consequential role in shaping the lives of not only Queen Elizabeth, but the rest of the royal family as well.
