A new invention allows a paralyzed adventurer to return to the wild, and could also change the way other people recover from their injuries.

Christian Bagg was an avid outdoorsman when a tragic 1996 accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. With training as a machinist, he spent years attempting to invent a wheelchair that could withstand the rugged trails of the Canadian Rockies near his home in Alberta, Calgary. But two years ago, his basement experiments took a giant leap forward with the arrival of a 3D printer that dramatically accelerated his ability to test new components. Now, his invention has not only allowed him better access to the mountains, but also may change the way other people with debilitating injuries can recover. NewsHour Weekend's Christopher Booker reports Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 6 p.m. on WXXI-TV.

This  program is part of Dialogue on Disability, a partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with physical and intellectual disabilities. During the week-long initiative, which runs January 14 through January 21, 2019 WXXI presents special programming on TV, radio, and at the Little Theatre.

Dialogue on Disability is made possible through support from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation. The partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies is supported by the Golisano Foundation and Move to Include, a project designed to build a more inclusive community by inspiring and motivating people to embrace different abilities and include all people in every aspect of community life.
