Cultural Expressions Remembering Dr. Paul Burgett

Sun, 11/18/2018 - 3:30pm - 4:00pm

WXXI remembers the late University of Rochester Vice President Emeritus and University Dean Emeritus Dr. Paul Burgett.

In 2016, WXXI and the City of Rochester presented a half-hour special that highlighted the history of the spoken word in African-American culture and how it influenced jazz. The program featured  Dr. Paul Burgett and Grammy award nominee, musician, and music producer Jimmie Highsmith, Jr. who shared their vast knowledge about jazz and its roots. In memory of Dr. Burgett and to honor him just days after his public memorial service at the University of Rochester on November 13 in Strong Auditorium on the River Campus, WXXI-TV presents an edited version of this 2016 Cultural Expressions episode. This presentation features Dr. Burgett's conversation, as well as parts of his interview that were not included in the original program. Cultural Expressions "Remembering Dr. Paul Burgett" airs Sunday, November 18 at 3:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV.

Dr. Paul Burgett was also a faculty member in the music department of the University of Rochester’s College of Arts & Sciences, where he taught courses in the History of Jazz, the Music of Black Americans, and Music Appreciation. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Eastman School of Music.
