This year, in our commitment to year-round opera, WXXI Classical 91.5 presents opera broadcasts from around the UK in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union and the BBC.

We'll have presentations from The Royal Opera, Scottish Opera, Opera North and the Glyndebourne Festival. BBC Opera's air Saturdays at 1 p.m. from June 23-August 4 on Classical 91.5.

The season begins with the The Royal Opera's world premiere of George Benjamin's new opera, Lessons in Love and Violence airing Saturday, June 23 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5. Described as "dangerously exciting," it is predicted to be the "most hotly anticipated opera premiere of the year."

Composer Benjamin conducts his own work inspired by Elizabethan drama. The story centers around a king, compelled to choose between love and political hardheadedness. His decisions provoke a civil war and set his own wife and son against him. The multinational cast includes French baritone Stéphane Degout, Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan and British tenors Peter Hoare and Samuel Boden.
