The romance between King Edward VIII and socialite Wallis Simpson forever changed the British Monarchy.

Embedded within the love story, though, is a tale of espionage and national security. Spying on the Royals focuses on the controversial surveillance of the couple that began in 1935 and continued long after Edward’s abdication. Part one of Spying on the Royals premieres on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 10:36 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Part two will air Thursday, May 31 at 10:36 p.m.

The two-part documentary details the little-known story of how the couple’s private life was recorded and tracked in intimate detail. In 1935, suspecting that Edward was being blackmailed, King George V placed his son under surveillance. What started as a British intelligence operation grew more complicated when it was discovered that spies from other nations were also listening in, and the outbreak of war with Germany made every conversation a security risk.

Combining insight from eyewitnesses, notes from the files of those surveying, and rich dramatic reenactments, the documentary adds new depth to the famous story of choosing love over duty.
