Handel’s “Messiah” is one of the most recognizable pieces in Western music, but many do not know the fascinating back story of how this beloved piece came to public attention and helped to save thousands of children. Combining historical research with vivid re-enactments, Handel's Messiah and the Foundling Hospital, airing Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV, brings viewers back to London, 1750, to recreate the special fundraising concert that ushered in a new era of philanthropic giving and turned “Messiah” into an icon.

Historian Amanda Vickery (Pride and Prejudice: Having A Ball) and BBC Radio 3 presenter Tom Service present this drama/documentary and offer rich insight into 18th century charity, Handel’s music and their unexpected intersections.
