POV: Almost Sunrise

Follow two Iraq veterans on a 2,700-mile trek on foot across America in POV: Almost Sunrise, airing Monday, December 11, 2017 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson, both tormented by depression for years after they returned home, and fearful of succumbing to the epidemic of veteran suicide, seek a lifeline in this story of veteran resilience and recovery.

In an attempt to put haunting combat experiences behind them, the two friends embark on an extraordinary journey – a 2,700 mile walk across the country from Wisconsin to California in order to reflect on their experiences of war and to, ultimately, save themselves.

Almost Sunrise captures an unprecedented portrait of veterans—one of hope, potential, and untold possibilities. It captures an intimate portrait of two friends suffering from the unseen wounds of war as they discover an unlikely treatment: the restorative power of silence and meditation.

POV: Almost Sunrise is part of WXXI’s Veterans Connections initiative that is designed to help bridge military and veteran needs with community support and awareness.  Through special TV, radio and online programming, documentary films, group discussions, news features, and a comprehensive web site (WXXI.org/veterans), Veterans Connections works to create a community platform to raise awareness and connect veterans with valuable resources.
