Backstage Pass with Kanack School of Music Summer Camp on Classical 91.5

Julia Figueras welcomes Alice Kanack, cellist Andrew Barnhart, and participants from the Kanack School of Music’s summer chamber music program to Backstage Pass.

We’ll learn about this hidden gem of Rochester’s music schools, and hear the students perform some classical music, a little fiddling, and a demonstration in the art of improvisation. Backstage Pass with Kanack School of Music Summer Camp airs Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5. and repeats Sunday, July 30, 2017 at 1pm.

Alice is a Rochester native who graduated from the Eastman School of Music, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in performance and composition. In 1984, she traveled to Japan to share with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki her ideas on developing creative ability in children. In a speech to the Matsumoto summer Conference that same year, Dr. Suzuki nicknamed her “Mozart’s Mother” in response to her innovative work in the development of the creative part of the brain. He added to this his hope, that as a result, somebody all children might create their own music.In addition to her work with Dr. Suzuki, Alice has also worked with Suzuki teachers Kay Sloan and Anastasia Jempelis. She was also on the faculty of the Third Street Settlement in Manhattan where she conducted the orchestra and taught violin, and Creative Ability Development classes.                                                              

Cellist Andrew Barnhart is a native of the Detroit, Michigan area where he began playing the cello in the public school system at the age of ten. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree, Performer’s Certificate, and Orchestral Studies Diploma from the Eastman School of Music where is is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts. Andrew serves as Principal Cello for the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes in Corning and Elmira, NY and of the Colgate University Symphony Orchestra where he is also on faculty. As a chamber musician he has performed with the Michigan Chamber Players, the Eastman Chamber Music Society, and the Eastman Virtuosi. He is a member of the Half-Six Piano Trio with pianist Toni James and violinist Man Yui Kitty Cheung. His major teachers have been Richard Piippo, Erling Blöndal Bengtsson, and Alan Harris.

Backstage Pass is a monthly live performance program that gives listeners the backstage experience of meeting local and visiting artists “up close and personal.”
