War Zone/Comfort Zone
War Zone/Comfort Zone
Thu, 06/30/2016 - 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Despite putting their life on the line for their country, many female veterans recieve less than a hero's welcome when returning to civilian life.
War is a scarring experience, and no one knows this better than a veteran. Today, women make up about 14 percent of the active U.S. military and more than 24 percent of the national gaurd. However, for many, their homecoming has been anything but sweet. Many women veterans must deal with poverty, homelessness, joblessness, and psychological and physiological effects of PTSD from military sexual assault and/or combat all within a system that is ill-equipped and, in some cases, unwilling to help
War Zone/Comfort Zone, airing Tuesday, June 28 at 6 p.m. on WXXI-WORLD, highlights the plight of female veterans through interviews and footage that stress the situation's urgency. The documentary follows the journey of veterans Shalini Madaras and Joy Kiss as they fight to open the first transitional house for women veterans in the state of Connecticut.
This screening of War Zone/Comfort Zone is also a part of VETERANS CONNECTIONS programming on WXXI-WORLD. To draw awareness to the issues of local veterans, WXXI and the Little Theatre convened a Veterans Affairs Task Force to identify the most pressing needs and issues facing veterans and their families in the Greater Rochester area and to make recommendations about ways that WXXI/Little programming and outreach can help address those needs. War Zone/Comfort Zone also airs Thursday, 6/30/16 at 10am and 4pm.
