Los Angeles Opera on Air

Tune as the new season kicks off with Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Classical 91.5 is pleased to continue its summer opera broadcast with six productions from the Los Angeles Opera On the Air, Saturdays at 1 p.m. beginning  July 7 on Classical 91.5/FM-HD 91.5-1. In just a quarter-century of existence, L.A. Opera has become – under the leadership of General Director Placido Domingo – the United States’ fourth largest opera company.

Eugene Onegin (in Russian) airs Saturday, July 7 at 1 p.m.  In a fit of youthful passion, Tatiana bares her soul to the mysterious Eugene Onegin, setting in motion an epic drama of love and regret. Featuring Tchaikovsky's trademark dances and irresistible melodies, Eugene Onegin is the composer's operatic masterpiece.

Cosi Fan Tutte (in Italian) airs Saturday, July 14 at 1 p.m.  We begin with two sisters, their fiancĂ©s, and a bet—will the women be faithful? “Of course,” brag the men. “Nay,” says the cynical Don Alfonso. Thus we enter a world of disguises and trickery in which the women—and love itself—are put to the test. Mozart’s genius turns a farce into a scintillating blend of thought provoking humor.

Romeo et Juliette (in Italian) airs Saturday, July 21 at 1 p.m. From the breathtaking love duet at sunrise to the opera's shattering conclusion in the tomb of the Capulets, Charles Gounod's lushly romantic music captures perfectly the unrestrained passions of youth and the tragedy visited on the lovers and their bitter rival families.

Simon Boccanegra(in Italian) airs Saturday, July 28 at 1 p.m. He’s striving for peace and desperately trying to get opposing sides to work together for the good of the country. But that’s the end of this opera; the action starts much earlier, when Simon Boccanegra, a swashbuckling pirate, is thrust into the role of Doge amidst the splendors of 14th-century Genoa. Not only are the patricians and plebeians at each others’ throats—the private dramas that keep unfolding are just as incendiary as the politics.
