Two Spirits Screening Event

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Join WXXI and the JCC for a free screening and discussion of the film followed by a talk back at the JCC of Greater Rochester.

Please join us at the JCC  for a free screening of Two Spirits, a film that explores the life and death of a boy who was also a girl, and the essentially spiritual nature of gender. The film will air at 7 p .m. and will be followed by a talk back with Kelly Baumgartner, co-founder of the Rochester 2 Spirit Society.

About the film:
Two Spirits introduces viewers to Fred Martinez, a Navajo boy who was also a girl. In an earlier era, he would have been revered. Instead he was murdered. Two Spirits interweaves the tragic story of a mother’s loss of her son with a revealing look at the largely unknown history of a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female, and many Native American cultures held places of honor for  people of integrated genders. Powerful and moving, Lydia Nibley’s  Two Spirits explores the life and death of Fred Martinez and the ancient Native American two-spirit tradition.

About the facilitator:
Kelly Baumgartner is a mixed-blood Cherokee 2 Spirit, artist, advocate, and U.S. Navy Veteran.  She is a co-founder of the Rochester 2 Spirit Society and Planning Committee member for the North East 2 Spirit Society Annual Gathering in NYC.   Kelly was previously the Victim Advocate in the Anti-Violence Program at the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Native American Studies and Gender Studies from The Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington.

The Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester address:
