WXXI Celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday with Cat in the Hat

Join us at The National Museum of Play at The Strong for a day of birthday fun!
WXXI celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday at the National Museum of Play at The Strong on Monday, February 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet the Cat from the PBS KIDS' series, Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!, and enjoy lots of silly activities. Dr. Seuss’s birthday celebration is being held in conjunction with the National Education Association’s Read Across America program, a national effort designed to promote children’s literature. The Read Across America program is held each year on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March 2, and to commemorate the day WXXI will broadcast a two-hour The Cat in the Hat-a-Thon! on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 8 a.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT2.1/cable 1011 and 11).

Silly Building, Caterpillar Atrium
Build something silly with Fat Brain Toys and ZOOB. Channel your inner-engineer to create something silly (Get inspired by images of silly contraptions from Dr. Seuss’ books)
Story Readings, Story Book Theater?
Drop in for readings of classic Dr. Seuss books (led by WXXI’s Educational Training Coordinator),11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Hands-on Science, Outside Super Kids Market
WXXI will provide families with hands-on science activities including a Science Scavenger Hunt throughout the museum. Families can find the scavenger hunt directions outside the Super Kids Market and then explore the museum while asking questions and recording information – just like real scientists do! In addition to the scavenger hunt, families can explore the different tracks that animals make with an Animal Print Stamp activity.
Crafts, Outside Super Kids Market
Make and decorate your own whimsical oversized—or undersized—hat to take home.

Nonsense Exhibit, Read Across America
Green eggs and ham, anyone? Stop by the Upside-Down House in Reading Adventureland and discover tongue twisters, jokes, and silly recipes. Explore other genres of literature while in the exhibit that feels like a life-size pop-up book.
Books, Galleries & Gelser Library Desk
Sign up for a library card and check out books from any of the museum’s book nooks. The Strong is home to a mini-branch of the Monroe County Library system.
