OnStage "The Prickers & Po' Boys Brass Band" on WXXI-TV
Sun, 02/12/2012 - 7:00pm
Tune in for a big sound from The Prickers and Po'Boys Brass Band in an all new episode of OnStage.
OnStage, WXXI's original television and radio series that spotlights musical talent from upstate New York, continues its third season with The Prickers and Po'Boys Brass Band on Sunday, February 12 at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT21.1/cable 1011 and 11).
The Prickers
The Prickers have been growing like their namesake, those small pesky balls of sticky spines that cling to your socks after you walk through the woods. You don’t know where you picked them up, but they’re there to remind you that you’re living in a place where there is more nature than people, that’s for sure. As a musical unit, The Prickers are as organic as any of the flora that covers the hills down here in the Naples Valley. They started growing when John Yerkovich, Nick Fargnoli and Karl Neubauer first got together and shared their love of traditional backwoods old-time roots music. With John on the banjo, Nick on guitar and mandolin and Karl on the fiddle and guitar, they found they could raise a hell of a racket and that their friends really liked it and wanted to hear more.
Po'Boys Brass Band
Po'Boys Brass Band is a New Orleans-style brass/funk/rock band. The four-trombone front produces a sonic explosion of sound not known by any other brass band standard. Think less Dirty Dozen and more Led Zeppelin. With a healthy dose of awesome original music, the Po'Boys are sure to make you dance! The band plays original charts as well as some tasty covers, conjuring up anything from Stevie Wonder and Tower of Power to Led Zeppelin and Edgar Winter. The band’s close ties to the great city of New Orleans guides the group spiritually, owing a lot of their sound concepts to the Rebirth Brass Band, Bonerama, the Dirty Dozen, Professor Longhair, The Meters, Dr. John, and many more. The band’s lineup of musicians consists of an all-star cast of characters that are each alumni of the Eastman School of Music, including a radio announcer, country singer, professor, and a doctor (of tuba that is).
OnStage repeats the following Saturday at 12 a.m. on WXXI-TV/HD, and a radio version of the series will begin airing on WRUR-FM 88.5 and WITH-FM 90.1 in February.

The Prickers
The Prickers performance was my introduction to WXXI On Stage. Loved it, and will definitely look for more local programming like this!!! The Prickers offer a unique blend of blue grass talent, and their Naples flavor comes through loud and strong. Loved seeing so many Neopolitans enjoying the show live!! Thanks, WXXI!!!
