Roller Derby is on the rise. Tune in and discover its history.

Roller Derby Chronicles: Rolling Thunder, airing Wednesday, March 16 at 9:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT21.1/cable 1011 and 11),  gives a glimpse into the exciting and historic Roller Derby game – from its humble roots as a Depression-era skating marathon through to its heyday as a nationally syndicated road show, and finally, to its untimely demise in 1973. Combining elements of physical endurance with theatrical showmanship, the game is a highly appealing form of entertainment that drew millions of fans to arenas and to television sets all across the country.

During the broadcast Rochester's own roller derby team, Roc City Roller Derby, will be in studio to share their experience competing. A very diverse group of women, they participate in three flat-track roller derby teams. The organization was started in 2008.

Roller Derby

My father invented Roller Derby, I promoted it and am on this program.

The Roc City Roller Derby is one of 786 Leagues worldwide in this fastest growing sport, some 30,000 skaters are competing in 25 countries.

The game they are skating is 100% legitimate and is the game my father and I always wanted it to be. Roller Derby is now being considered for the Olympics.
