Healthy You: A Community Forum on Child Obesity and Child Health

Healthy You: A Community Forum on Child Obesity and Child Health

Thu, 11/18/2010 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm

WXXI addresses childhood obesity in an hour-long televised forum.

WXXI helped to galvanize the community around the eradication of lead poisoning. Now, Rochester's public broadcasting station joins forces with community leaders and the best medical minds to raise awareness about childhood obesity.

As part of its Healthy You initiative, WXXI hosts a televised special to address the issue of child obesity and help people lead healthier lives. The forum invites members of the community to discuss the latest epidemic that threatens our children. Click on the video box below to watch the program.

You: A Community Forum on Child Obesity and Child Health was recorded before a live audience on Thursday, November 18 at 7 p.m. You can submit comments or questions and learn more about Healthy You on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/HealthyYouPage.

The hour-long televised forum was led by a panel of experts including: Dr. Stephen Cook, University of Rochester Medical Center, and representatives from The Rochester City School District and the Greater Rochester Health Foundation. There were also nutritionists on hand to offer advice for good eating and to share stories.

Healthy You: A Community Forum on Child Obesity and Child Health aired Sunday, November 21 at 2 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT 2.1/cable 1011 and 11).

This is the second of two televised forums that WXXI will host as part of its Healthy You initiative. WXXI's first forum on childhood obesity aired on WXXI-TV and partnering station WSKG-TV (Binghamton) in late February 2010, and is available to view online by clicking here.  The initiative is designed to help educate families across the region about the importance of eating healthy, maintaining a healthy body weight, and exercising. In addition to the televised forums, the project includes teacher workshops, TV segments to promote healthy behaviors to school-aged children, and a web site.

This televised forum, and the Healthy You initiative, are made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. WXXI is your source for good health information.
