As We Forgive
As We Forgive
Sat, 10/02/2010 - 8:00pm
Can mercy restore what genocide destroyed?
Could you forgive a person who murdered your family? The subjects of As We Forgive face this very question and others without easy answers. Through in-depth interviews, the documentary follows two Rwandan women on a journey to make peace with the neighbors who slaughtered their families during the 1994 genocide. The film, narrated by actor and activist Mia Farrow, provides an intimate, first-hand view of the encounters between genocide perpetrators and their victims’ families as they navigate the road to reconciliation.
As We Forgive airs Saturday, October 2 at 8 p.m. on PBS World (cable 524/DT21.2).
The men and women of As We Forgive speak for a nation still wracked by the grief of a genocide that killed one in eight Rwandans in less than 100 days. Overwhelmed by an enormous backlog of court cases, the government released more than 50,000 genocide perpetrators back into the very communities they helped to destroy. Without the hope of full justice, Rwanda turned to a new solution: reconciliation.
