Efforts to counter LGBT stereotypes.

The lack of fair and accurate representations of LGBT people is arguably one of the leading causes of homophobia. One way to eradicate homophobia is to counter stereotypes with positive gay images that raise awareness and reflect the diversity of the communities. This July, IN THE LIFE features lesbian "voluntouristas" who bring positive visibility and lend a helping hand to local communities in the Caribbean, and rappers who use their words and images to change hearts and minds within the music industry.

In the Life "Defying Stereotypes" airs Sunday, July 25 at 11;30 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable 11/cable 1011).

Since 1992, the Emmy-nominated documentary series IN THE LIFE has provided a national audience with in-depth coverage and analysis of art, news, history, culture, politics and trends from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. Each half-hour episode contains segments that range from youth and education, arts and culture, to the media, human rights, religion and community development. A recurring segment, "A Conversation With...," offers poignant, sometimes funny, first-person accounts of the touchstone experiences of the LGBT community and issues shaping the gay experience.
