Dr. Christiane Northrup: Menopause and Beyond on WXXI-TV
Sun, 03/07/2010 - 12:00pm
Women's Health Pioneer Dr. Christiane Northrup teaches women the "Wisdom of Menopause" in a New PBS Special geared to dispel myths about "The Change".
As we flex our economic, mental and physical muscles and put our money and energy where our ideals are, the world will change in ways that reflect our inherent women's wisdom, wisdom that has the potential to benefit every woman, man, child and living being on the planet."
– Dr. Christiane Northrup
Dr. Christiane Northrup, a leading pioneer in mind/body health and one of the most sought-after women's health advocates in the country, presents a special program based on the material that is her signature area of expertise: menopause. DR. CHRISTIANE NORTHRUP: MENOPAUSE AND BEYOND airs Sunday, March 7 at 12 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable1011/cable11).
MENOPAUSE AND BEYONDis based on the 2006 version of Dr. Northrup's book The Wisdom of Menopause. When the book was originally released in 1999, it shot to the top of The New York Times best-seller list. Read by millions of women all over the world, it is considered the gold standard of midlife health information for women. At the time of its publication, Oprah Winfrey embraced the information in The Wisdom of Menopause and invited Dr. Northrup to appear on her show multiple times.
In her new special, Dr. Northrup presents her latest thinking and the most up-to-date information on four areas of health and wellness that women often have on their minds: nutrition and exercise, hormone therapy, heart health and sexuality. Dr. Northrup refutes the stereotypic definition of menopause as a frenzy of hot flashes and hormonal mood swings and, instead, posits that this transition is an illuminating time of rebirth that has the power to completely transform a woman's life and health for the better!
The program is divided into four acts. In act one, Dr. Northrup invites the audience to consider menopause in a new light — as an opportunity for women to heal all the "unhealed" parts of themselves. In act two, she helps the audience tackle midlife weight gain and explains that "most menopausal symptoms ... can be managed with diet and exercise alone." Act three concentrates on hormone replacement, and in act four, Dr. Northrup talks frankly about women's need to understand and connect with their midlife sensuality.
Throughout the program, Dr. Northrup's humor, openness and warm style, combined with carefully researched medical information, create a viewing event that educates and inspires. As she tells her theater and home viewing audience, "I've been to the mountain top and I have come down 'the other side,' and I can tell you that the news is good — really, really good."
Dr. Christiane Northrup is an internationally acclaimed specialist in women's health and wellness. A practicing obstetrician/gynecologist for more than 20 years, she is also a New York Times best-selling author whose books have been read by more than a million women worldwide. Dr. Northrup is a leading proponent of medicine and healing that acknowledges the unity of the mind and body in creating health.
DR. CHRISTIANE NORTHRUP: MENOPAUSE AND BEYONDwas taped before an audience of 900 fans at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Throughout March, WXXI-TV and Radio is proud to offer special programming in honor of National Women’s History Month. These programs highlight the historical contributions women have made as well as the ongoing situations of women around the globe.
