Informational Text with Molly - April 16 @ 7pm ET

We’ve all met an info kid: a child who falls in love with a specific topic like dinosaurs or a certain sport or butterflies.  These children absorb all types of texts to learn more about their obsession, and can often quote facts and figures like an encyclopedia.  Well, Molly’s questions spread beyond just one topic, but she is always looking for answers. And she seems to always answer her own questions by using informational text.

We know that Infusing informational text in the early grades not only gives young children a jump-start on learning content knowledge but also engages them in reading and writing that establishes a firm foundation for their future literacy development.  In this first episode of our virtual professional learning series, “Teaching with Molly of Denali” we’ll hear from the country’s leading expert on informational text, and the show’s instructional advisor, Nell Duke. She’ll lead participants through their own journey of understanding, and will provide important guidance around helping children determine the right questions to ask that will lead them to the information they seek.

Culturally Responsive Teaching with Molly - April 23 @ 7pm ET

Join us in the second episode of our virtual professional learning series, “Teaching with Molly of Denali” as we explore some of the very important social and emotional learnings that are woven into the show, especially those that teach the values of diversity and inclusion. In the show, Molly investigates all the interesting and important ways her culture is part of who she is, and she shares her cultural values and awareness with her friends and community. In this virtual professional learning episode, educators will have the opportunity to meet Molly of Denali creative producer Princess Lucaj, who will lead us through a discussion about how educators can honor their students, embrace differences and appreciate similarities in a systematic way, that goes beyond simply offering food samples from around the world or engaging in read alouds.

Integrating Technology with Molly - April 30 @ 7pm ET

In the final episode of our virtual professional learning series, “Reasons to Love (and Teach) Molly of Denali” we’ll celebrate the fact that Molly loves her technology, and uses it responsibly!  Molly of Denali was specifically created to model the various ways that children can use informational texts in their daily lives. So join us as we consider the important role real-world tech use plays in our student’s lives, and their understanding and engagement with informational text.
